Healing Through Horses

For women who have experienced human trafficking, trust often feels impossible to rebuild after years of manipulation, control, and violence have left deep wounds. At Engedi Refuge, we encourage trust healing through the quiet, steady presence of horses.

Equine assisted therapy works well for people who have experienced anxiety, grief, trauma, and pain because horses are prey animals. They are attuned to recognize fear, tension, and emotional dishonesty. Horses do not judge or demand explanations. They simply respond to what a person is feeling in the moment. For women who have experienced human trafficking and have learned to mask their feelings to survive, sometimes this is the first relationship where pretending is neither effective nor necessary. A horse's calm, non-verbal acceptance can create space for genuine emotions, acceptance, and love to surface.

Many women who have completed Engedi’s program describe feeling accepted while spending time with horses. The rhythmic act of grooming, riding, or simply standing beside a fifteen hundred pound animal that chooses to stay close rebuilds something that their traffickers tried to destroy. Agency. Healing with horses helps survivors learn to set safe boundaries, read body language, and communicate their needs assertively. These are skills a horse responds to without punishment.

Over time, these lessons begin to translate beyond the barn. The women at Engedi report reduced anxiety, better emotional regulation, and a returning sense of confidence and self-worth. Trust, that was once shattered, begins to regrow. Sometimes it starts with an animal. Then with Engedi’s staff members and volunteers. Then with other people.

Engedi's holistic healing approach is more than therapy. It's a bridge back to humanity. Each session with horses offers proof that connections can be safe again, and that healing can begin one gentle step at a time.
